The phone call

“Hello…hello…can you hear me?”

The disembodied voice on the end of the phone…repeating

“Hello? It’s a really bad connection…can you hear me?”

She recognizes the voice, tears flowing freely down her cheeks, emotions suppressed, now released in an unstoppable tide, she replies, barely able to form the words…

“He…hello?”

“It’s me, Paul, this is a really bad connection, I hope you can hear me! I just wanted to say that I got here safe and I miss you so much!”

She weeps, openly, having to lean against the wall of the hospital corridor as her legs threaten to give way, the pain almost unbearable….

“You can’t be Paul…”

She sobs, helpless to control her feelings

“Paul died five minutes ago…..”
