The conspiracy


“The Government would do that, would they? Surely not! Not to their own people!”

We sat that night in the bar drinking, probably more than we should have but sometimes you have to. Sometimes it just gets too much. The knowledge that you hold inside builds up and you just can’t keep it inside. 

I knew before I started talking that I was making a mistake. They…we…have ears everywhere, and with every word I was putting my friend of twenty years in greater danger. I tried to stop myself but once started, that was it, the words flowed faster and faster, the secrets deeper, darker, pushing the boundaries of secrecy way beyond breaking point. 

We staggered out of the bar at about one in the morning and fell into a taxi together. I left him when we reached my flat. That was the last time I saw him….
